Definition of a driving license for automatic transmission/driving license category B78
Anyone in possession of a B78 driving license may only use vehicles with an automatic transmission. In times when the topic of electromobility is becoming increasingly attractive, interest in the automatic driving license is also increasing.
With the B78 driving license, it is permitted to drive motor vehicles - with the exception of categories AM, A1, A2 and A - with a maximum permissible mass of up to 3,500 kilograms. The vehicles must be designed to transport a maximum of eight people. In addition, a trailer with a total mass of 750 kilograms or a maximum total mass of 3,500 kilograms may be driven in combination with the vehicle. The license holder is also permitted to drive three-wheeled motor vehicles in Germany.
Frequently asked questions about the automatic driving license
Below we answer some of the questions that our learner drivers often ask us:
Can I switch from an automatic to a manual car?
If you would like to switch to a manual car after obtaining your automatic driving license, you will need at least ten 45-minute driving lessons with a manual car. As part of a subsequent 15-minute test drive with a driving instructor, you must prove that you can handle the manual car. If you successfully complete the test drive, the key number 197 is entered on your driving license and you can drive a manual car.
How much does an automatic driver's license cost?
The costs for driving license training are not set by law and vary depending on the driving school. In addition to the basic fee, which already includes the theory lessons, there are the costs for the driving lessons, the learning material and the fees for the theory and practical test. As there is no need to shift gears and operate the clutch, many learner drivers need fewer driving lessons than when training on a manual car. As a result, the costs for practical training can be lower.
Which cars can I drive with an automatic transmission driver's license?
If you have an automatic driving license, you are only allowed to drive vehicles with automatic transmissions.
How long does the driver training course take?
Twelve double lessons of 45 minutes each are prescribed for the theory part. In addition, there are two hours on additional subjects. In addition to the basic training, the practical part includes five hours of overland driving, four hours of highway driving and three hours of night driving.
